A great school chess club is built around four components: recreational play with friends, formal competition, appropriate instruction, and skill building exercises of various kinds. To allow for these four components, our typical club meeting is 90 minutes long. Given the dynamics of a scholastic chess club, most instruction is done in a group setting, though our coaches look for "teachable moments" with an individual student, or a small group of students. Our skill building exercises include paper based puzzles, positions to play out against an opponent, and visualization exercises to help players track the future course of a game in their heads. Larger clubs are divided into separate groups, each with their own coach, based on age and playing strength.
